JUNETEETH ARTS & CULTURE ZONE FAQ


What is the live mural contest?


Selected Milwaukee artists compete live by creating original murals inspired by the annual Juneteenth theme. Guests can watch the artwork come to life throughout the day.


How are mural winners selected?


A panel of judges scores artwork based on:


Theme integration

Originality & creativity

Overall visual impact

Completion & presentation


Winners are announced online after judging concludes.



Are there activities for kids and families?


Absolutely. The zone includes family-friendly art stations, community walls, creative activities, music, drumming, and hands-on experiences for all ages.


Can I participate as an artist if I have in the past?


Yes. Artist applications are open to all!


Artists should arrive between 7:30 AM – 8:30 AM for check-in, setup, and supply organization. All artists must be ready to begin by the official start time.


Where do artists check in?


Artist check-in will be located at the TRUE Skool Arts & Culture Zone headquarters tent near 3rd & RING


What time does painting begin?


9:00 AM and artists may start once their space is assigned and instructions are completed.


What time does the contest end?


All murals must be completed by 3:00 PM sharp unless otherwise directed by event staff.



What materials are provided?


TRUE Skool will provide general shared supplies such as:


Spray paint

Acrylic paint

Brushes

Basic tools

Water access


Artists are encouraged to bring specialty colors, markers, caps, or tools specific to their style.


What size surface will artists paint on?


Each artist/team will receive an assigned 2 mural canvases (36x48)




Can artists bring assistants?


If working as a team (of 2), all members must be listed in application


Is there parking or unloading access?


No. Artists should arrive early for nearby street parking and unloading. Expect a LARGE crowd


What if it rains or weather changes?


Organizers will monitor weather conditions and communicate adjustments. Safety comes first. Any delays or schedule changes will be announced onsite and digitally.


Will artists receive payment or prizes?


All selected participating Artists stipends and TOP 3 prize details are communicated in advance. Required forms (W9/invoice) must be completed upon request to get paid.
